Souvent qualifié de « fauve méditerranéen », Charles Camoin (1879-1965) s’est inscrit, par ses liens avec Paris et la bohème montmartroise, dans le cercle de l’avant-garde internationale. Affilié au fauvisme, lié à Matisse, Marquet et Manguin, il n’a pour autant jamais renoncé à son indépendance artistique : « En tant que coloriste, j’ai toujours été et suis encore un fauve en liberté ».
Cet ouvrage permet de redécouvrir l’œuvre du peintre en intégrant une centaine de tableaux et dessins, dont certains inédits. Il approfondit différents épisodes historiques et thématiques de la vie de l’artiste et analyse l’évolution de son langage pictural, fondé sur la sensation colorée.
Often described as the ‘Mediterranean Fauve’, Charles Camoin (1879–1965)— through his links with Paris and the bohemian life of Montmartre—joined the circle of the international avant-garde. Despite his affiliation with Fauvism and his friendship with Matisse, Marquet and Manguin, he never abandoned his artistic independence: ‘As a colourist, I have always been a free Fauve’.
This catalogue will enable visitors to rediscover the painter’s work, and will feature one hundred paintings and drawings, some of which have never before been exhibited. It takes a closer look at some of the main historical and thematic episodes in the artist’s life, and analyses the developments in his pictorial language, based on the sensations of colour.
